Ginger growing environmental requirements

Time: Jan 23,2025

【Summary Description】 The cultivation environment of ginger requires suitable temperature, light, water, soil nutrients, and other specific conditions.

The growth environment requirements for ginger mainly include temperature, light, water, soil nutrients, and other specific conditions

  I. Temperature Requirements

Ginger likes warmth and is intolerant of low temperatures and frost. The temperature requirements for each stage of its growth are as follows:

Germination stage: Requires a temperature above 16℃, the most suitable temperature for germination is 22~25℃. The sowing temperature must ensure that the soil temperature remains above 15℃.

Seedling stage: The suitable growth temperature is 20~25℃.

Stem and leaf growth stage: The suitable growth temperature is 25-28℃. Above 30℃ and with drought, leaves are prone to falling off, affecting plant growth. The temperature required for rhizome expansion is 25℃ during the day and 17-18℃ at night.

Growth cessation stage: Growth stops below 15℃, plant growth stops below 11℃, and stems and leaves die when frost occurs.

Storage period: The suitable temperature is 13~15℃; lower temperatures can cause frost damage, while higher temperatures can cause diseases.

  II. Light Requirements

Ginger is a shade-tolerant plant, and its requirements for day length are not strict; it is not tolerant of strong light. It needs dark conditions during the germination stage and moderate light conditions during the seedling stage. In the vigorous growth stage, there are many branches, and the plants shade each other, so the demand for external light is relatively strong. However, it should be noted that if seedlings encounter high temperatures, drought, and strong light during the seedling stage, it will cause the plants to grow stunted and the leaves to turn yellow. Therefore, during the growth of ginger, the light conditions should be adjusted appropriately according to its growth stage.

  III. Water Requirements

Ginger has an underdeveloped root system, poor drought and flood resistance, and extremely strict water requirements. During the growth period, both over-dry and over-wet soil are detrimental to the growth and expansion of ginger pieces and easily cause disease and rot. Therefore, the soil should be kept moist, but waterlogging should be avoided. During the vigorous growth period of ginger, a large amount of water is needed; at this time, the soil field capacity should be maintained at 70%~80%. However, from the late vigorous growth stage to harvest, the number of waterings and the amount of irrigation should be controlled to avoid cracking of the ginger skin and darkening of the color, affecting the marketability and storability.

  IV. Soil Nutrient Requirements

Soil type: Ginger is suitable for growing in loose, well-drained soil. The most suitable soil type is sandy loam or sandy soil. Heavy clay and clay soils will cause soil waterlogging, which is detrimental to the growth of ginger.

pH value: Ginger requires a soil pH value between 5.5 and 7, slightly acidic or neutral. Overly acidic or alkaline soil will affect the absorption and nutrient utilization of ginger rhizomes.

Nutrient content: Ginger growth requires a rich supply of nutrients. The soil should have an appropriate amount of organic matter, sufficient nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as trace elements such as zinc, iron, and boron.

  V. Other Specific Conditions

Land leveling: For convenient planting and management, the land should be relatively flat and should not have obvious pits or hills.

Land water source: Ginger planting requires sufficient irrigation water sources; there should be a reliable water source near the land.

Land history: It is advisable to avoid selecting land that has previously grown ginger or has related pests and diseases to prevent the breeding of pests and diseases.

The planting environment requirements for ginger include suitable temperature, light, water, soil nutrients, and other specific conditions. To meet these requirements, growers should take corresponding management measures, such as building shade sheds, reasonable irrigation, fertilization, and soil cultivation, to ensure the normal growth and high yield and quality of ginger.
